On a variety of doors Spartan Doors offers the additional option of sheeting and capping to meet the specific needs of our customers. In the past we have offered steel sheeting and capping for fire doors of all sizes. However, due to a recent change to the Standards we no longer offer sheeting and capping on fire doors  but rather just fire door sheeting. Nevertheless, the sheeting of fire doors is used in a range of applications such as external fire doors in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

What Are Fire Doors?

Fire doors are a fire resistant door used to prevent the spread of fire and smoke between two  areas. Spartan doors use a hardwood timber frame around a vermiculite core, which have fire resistant properties. Fire Doors are used as a safe egress in the event of an emergency. They are used as part of a passive fire prevention system.

What Is Sheeting And Capping?

Sheeting and capping is a thin sheet (usually 0.55mm to 1.9mm) of steel adhered to the two faces of the door and a “C” channel is screwed onto the perimeter of the door. The most common materials used for sheeting and capping are Colourbond, Zincanneal, Galvabond and stainless steel

Since the introduction of AS 1530.4-2014 on the 1st September 2022, capping is no longer compliant for new fire doors. This could change in the future with more testing.

Sheeting and capping has the advantage of being more resistant to the weather, a more sturdy door in the case of a break in etc, as well as looking great.

Custom Sizing

To meet AS 1530.4 fire doors have a maximum height of 3000mm and maximum width of 1500mm, which when used in a double door set have a width of 3000mm.

The advantages of larger size doors especially in a commercial application, larger objects can be moved through them, as well as a wider door prevents a choke point for a large number of people making an escape in an emergency.

Fire Door Sheeting Applications

Fairly recently we have completed a project for a Data Centre in Sydney requiring a range of internal and external doors, some of which were fire doors. Of note, were some large fire doors up to and including 3000mm (H) x 1200mm (W) which had sheeting on both faces and 0.9mm Zincanneal capping. As mentioned above, the Standards have changed and this project was completed and delivered before the 1st of September 2022. The above is just one example as there are a range of residential, commercial, and industrial uses for our sheeted fire doors.
